OVERVIEW

Cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15-3) Test

Cancer antigen 15-3 (CA15-3) is a protein made by using a range of cells, specifically breast most cancers cells. The protein moves into the blood, where it can be tested.

CA15-3 stages are greater than ordinary in most women with breast cancers that has spread to different parts of the body (called metastatic breast cancer). Not all sorts of breast cancers will trigger CA 15-3 ranges to rise, as some forms of cancer cells don’t over-produce the antigen.

Why a CA15-3 test is done?

CA15-3 is a tumour marker. It is used to check how breast cancers therapy is working and seem to be for cancer that has come back, or recurred, after treatment.

If you are detected of breast cancer that has progressed to other parts of the body, or metastasized, you may also have this test, along with different exams such as hormone receptor testing and HER2 grade testing.

CA15-3 is no longer measured for early stage breast cancer due to the fact the levels of this protein are hardly ever higher than regular at this stage.

How a CA15-3 Test is performed?

A CA15-3 is a blood test commonly done in a lab or medical institution. You don’t need any specific preparation for the test.

What the outcomes of CA15-3 mean?

CA15-3 ranges can be higher than everyday with cancerous and non-cancerous conditions. CA15-3 is most frequently amplified in breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.

In general, the greater the degree of CA15-3 in the blood, the higher the chances of cancer spread in the body.

The ranges are very elevated when breast cancer has spread to the bones, the liver or both. If the levels of CA15-3 goes down or returns to normal, it may additionally imply that treatment is working. If levels of CA15-3 amplify over time, it might also mean that the cancer is not responding positively to treatment, it is perhaps spreading or is coming back (recurring).

CA15-3 may also be greater than normal in most cancers of the lung, pancreas, ovary and prostate, however these levels are not as excessive as with breast cancer.

Non-cancerous conditions that enlarge CA 15-3 include endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory ailment and liver disease. It also can increase at some stage in pregnancy.

With these conditions, CA15-3 ranges normally come back to normal overtime.

What happens if a there is a change or abnormality in the CA15-3 Test.

Your healthcare practitioner will figure out if more tests, procedures, follow-up care or change in the treatments is needed.
